The Hangover Part II - DVD

I'm glad I didn't pay to see this in the theater. I definitely do not consider myself a film snob. I am very generous when it comes to giving films a chance that others may hate. Having said that, I think Hangover II sucks. Yep, rarely do I give a scathing review as I try to pull the good out of most films I watch. But man, I was disappointed with this one. Considering that I thought the first Hangover was one of the best comedies I've seen in a while, part II would be its evil twin brother. Most of the jokes seemed forced, and the pace was too damn slow. It did have funny scenes and even topped the first one as far as shock value. But just because you have shock value doesn't always mean it'll be funny. When they push the shock value without any REAL comedy behind it, it winds up being FLAT. What made the first one so great is that it had lots of shock value AND equal amounts of great comedy to go with it. Thumbs down for Hangover II. They should've just stopped where they ended in Vegas.

Batman: NOEL

Ho Ho Ho, here to get you into the Christmas spirit is... Batman??

Yep, in one of the biggest surprises in the world of graphic novels this season, Batman: Noel swings into our world and drops a new take on that old familiar Christmas Story by Dickens. Written by Lee Bermejo, Batman: NOEL puts a twist on the Dickens' tale and brings it into the heart of Gotham city. If I can say three words about this is, "Get this book". For anyone that loves the Batman franchise as much as I do, you'll be sure to enjoy this. I never really read a Batman story that struck an emotional chord in me, but this one did. The phenomenal story and artwork in this book makes it one of the years best for me. So go and check it out!

David Crowder*Band - Oh For Joy

It was sad news earlier this year when the David Crowder*Band would be breaking up after this year. So naturally, all of us that are familiar with the band expect a farewell album that we can remember for years. Well, DCB has stated that they are working on a final album. But the most recent "Oh For Joy" is not it. This is a little gift dropped by the band for fans to enjoy this holiday season, as well as other seasons to come. So while we wait for them to finish their last album, we get to hear their unique versions of Christmas favorites such as Joy To The World, Angels We Have Heard On High, and Silent Night on this album that includes a total of 8 tracks. Do yourself a favor and add some holiday cheer to your festivies this year courtesy of DCB!

TobyMac - Christmas in DiverseCity

I am proud to post this review by Amica Paige of TobyMac's "Christmas in DiverseCity"... Check it out!

I wouldn't call myself a Christian; I'd rather wait for Truth in the end to reveal what's beyond this fragile life, which is nevertheless sprinkled with beauty, peace, and joyful things, if we only cared enough to see that the glass is indeed half-full and not always view it from the top as half-empty and lacking. I consider myself a hopeful skeptic, an occasional atheist, a nature worshipper, and a lover of art, music, and words. In other words, I'm a doubting Thomas and a crumb-licking dog searching for home. I'm both spiritual and worldly, if there is such a separation. I regard myself earthy, since I, like you, am grounded by gravity no matter how different our spiritual takes are, and recognize that our only exit is exactly the only exit from this life—to dust.

Why the long intro just to review a musical piece? Well, my theatrics lead to this: my general fondness for music. I keep my ears open—yes, even to those labeled as "Christian" music, which are sometimes disregarded, mocked, just plain hated, or unnecessarily worshipped even more so than the God in their message. I believe that music, in all its forms, opens the mind, touches the spirit, and pierces the soul, if it bears any substance at all. Having said all that, here is my experience with TobyMac's Christmas in DiverseCity, a collaborative album.

Words that came to mind upon the first listen:
Breezy, Jingly, Snappy, Dancy.
Melodic. A soulful variety.
Tender...yet hard enough to rock to or, as I prefer, dance to.

And after the 2nd and umpteenth plays, here's what I think:
Christmas This Year rings in beautifully with a smooth blend of Toby's arresting ease and Leigh Nash's angelic vocals—there she goes again!—complemented by the entrancing background piano.

The First Noel is a strong follow with a rhythmically captivating arrangement, while Mary's Boy Child is definitely one of my favorite songs in the album, as even a bitter soul may render this soothing tune as ear candy—a delicious mix of intoxicating calm and head sway.

I seriously would dance or jog to O Come, All Ye Faithful—alright, I actually did dance to it and would have also done the latter if I didn't have a problem with sweaty earbuds slipping from my ears. However, singing along to this euphonic tune can make one feel like a real phony, especially if you like to question the Being being sung about. I couldn't help it though. When a song is brilliantly executed with just the right amount of funk, a listener can get carried away.

Little Drummer Boy is rich in beats, yet manages to hold its footing quite well, not losing grip of its context in all the fun, whereas This Christmas (Father of the Fatherless) is a tuneful chant of its title in parenthesis.

Carol of The Kings is a finely crafted symphonic song, making it a real treat on that point alone. As an aside and not to discount the artist's own merit, the rapper sounds like Kanye West, whose rapping style, per se, I like.

Birth of Love exudes energy. I'd play this as a backdrop for a Holiday fashion show if I move in that arena.

What Child is This? penetrates the way a song should...even if you didn't bother with Christ. Its musical strength can mesmerize.

It Snowed is rock, pure and simple. If guitar riffs could jolt you into head bobbing, you'd dig this. But I dance to the beat of brit pop and funky or entrancing songs and relish the slightly tamer side of some alternative and indie tunes.

Angels We Have Heard On High presents yet another angelic voice, wrapped in heavenly harmony and goosebumps-inducing chorus, warmly tied with an instrumental ribbon. There is a bit of narrated biblical message later in the song, as a sidenote to those who just can't be bothered with it or those whose ears are simply numb to it.

Santa's Coming Back Around is a jazzy R&B, a style that doesn't quite stir my spirit, like rock music, and the outburst in the intro can be quite grating. Still, it's just my queer taste and certainly not a pompous and foolish attempt to disregard the artist(s). Ditto for Christmas Time which is another flavorful R&B, at least for those who jive to those beats.

To end, if music is chocolate, this is definitely a box worth grabbing this season. The only difference is, it would never run out on you. If likened to coffee, DiverseCity is a nicely brewed Holiday album, infused with such melodic ease, funk, and musical depth, elements that arguably prevent an album from turning into just another overprocessed junk in a music industry often stricken with a toxic tick that saps the sublime out of its pop music, leaving them as substanceless as soda pop, regardless of its spiritual angle, or lack of. I give this Christmas album a 9 3/4s out of ten stars, only because I'm still stuck at King's Cross and could never quite get to perfection such as that of closure...wishing that the Great Hall had never closed its doors... Perhaps, I should give DiverseCity a few more hundred listen to give it a perfect ten.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

Being the huge Harry Potter fan that I am, I was ecstatic upon receiving my copy of Deathly Hallows Part II. Seeing this on Blu-ray was a great experience since the only other time I saw it was in the theater. Just being able to stop and rewind key scenes to take it all in again was a lot of fun. The movie has its flaws, but overall it was a very satisfying end to the franchise that has done what no other movie series has ever done before. Sure, it's sad that we have no more HP films to look forward to each year. But having the films on Blu-ray and experiencing them at home will do just fine for now and in the future. Of course the Blu-ray is loaded with bonus features that cannot be missed. One key feature is a sit down conversation between Dan Radcliffe and JK Rowling. I can't recommend this Blu-ray set enough. Go out and see it now!

Kevin Max - Cotes d'Armor

There are so many good albums I have been meaning to share on this site but just haven't had the time. However, I will be doing that soon. But first I point your attention to an album titled Cotes d'Armor by Kevin Max. As an artist who proudly wears his eccentricity on his sleeve, this album is loaded with memorable songs that were birthed by his creative mind. I swear, each time this guy puts out an album, he outdoes his previous efforts each time. If you are not familiar with K-Max, I suggest start with this CD then work your way back. If you are familiar and appreciate his style, then you'll be sure to get lost in these songs.

A definite 4 out of 4 stars.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

The latest installment is on Blu-ray/DVD, and what better weekend to enjoy in some pirate revelry than Halloween weekend!

Now, this wasn't my favorite POTC, nor did I think it was a very impressive film. But, it's still POTC. See, with a franchise like this one, it doesn't matter how bad the film is. As long as Johnny Depp is reprising his role as Jack Sparrow and there is some mysterious legend being chased, it's almost impossible not to like it. Having said all that, despite being the weakest of the 4 films, I still recommend seeing it. Especially on Blu-ray. The concept of them trying to find the Fountain Of Youth was pretty cool, and some surprise guest stars (Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane) make it an enjoyable ride. One of my favorite parts is the opening sequence where Jack and Gibbs try to escape London! If you're looking for a good family flick to take in this weekend, definitely check this one out. As far as the Blu-ray version goes, the film quality is superb. However, they could've included a bit more in the extras to make it a better set. But again, I still recommend cheking it out!

Scream 4

The franchise that gave slasher flicks a reboot in the 90's has returned for a new decade with new rules. Say what you may, but I liked this film! It had all the elements that cemented the other Scream films in horror movie history. The best part is that the film led you on without revealing exactly who the killers were. They teased you here and there throughout the film making you think it's one character, only to think it's someone else a second later. With all the changes in the way we view entertainment, we miss out on not having more films like these. One thing about the Scream films is that while they provided enough scenes to make you jump, they never took themselves too seriously. This one is no exception. The Blu-ray version is out now and I recommend checking it out!

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules

Funny, clever, and... FUNNY!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules is the hilarious sequel to the hit film Diary of a Wimpy Kid, based on the successful book series created by Jeff Kinney. I have a son who loves these books, so I am quite familiar with the stories. Having watched both films, I can say that they stayed very true to the books. Rodrick Rules follows Greg and his older brother Rodrick, who makes Greg's life hell. From beginning to end this film is a riot. I actually think it was funnier than the first film, and this one has me excited to see how they come up with the next film. Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules is out on Blu-ray and I definitely recommend that you ch-ch-ch-check it out.

Doctor Who: Series 6, Part 1

Ok, stop what you're doing, head out and grab a copy of Doctor Who: Series 6, Part 1 on DVD now. Prepare for some addicting, mind-blowing shows that will have you dizzy if you don't pay attention! Honestly, this show is such a blast that I will find myself going back again and again to watch. Right from the beginning of this DVD set, we see the team travel through time and get involved in a very mysterious situation where they must get help from former President Nixon! Every twist and turn of this awesome show is here in a 2-disc set to enjoy. And I enjoyed it quite a bit. I highly recommend it for its mind-bending awesomeness!

The Smurfs: A Magical Smurf Adventure

One thing is for sure, the Smurfs will always rock! With the movie out in theaters, it would be good to brush up on your Smurf knowledge with the DVD release of ! This 2-disc set of 10 fun episodes of the Smurfs is a must see for any fan of the show. I got a kick out of watching these episodes and being brought back to my childhood again. Show after show, you get to see how they just cannot keep themselves out of some kind of trouble! I highly recommend this DVD for both kids and adults! For a taste, check out the clip below:

PLATOON’s 25th anniversary (Blu-ray + DVD)

Before he was "WINNING", before such classics like Men At Work and Hot Shots, Charle Sheen starred as a lead in the moving Vietnam War flick known as Platoon. This was one of Oliver Stone's masterpieces, and 25 years later it still stands the tests of time. Very disturbing and realistic, Platoon highlights the fact that "the first casualty of was is innocence". MGM Home Entertainment has released a special 25th anniversary edition of this film on Blu-ray + DVD combo pack. If I were to recommend the top video sets of the year, this would be one of the top ones. The remastered video and audio on the Blu-ray version really show the film like never before. It's a movie that will stick with you for days after watching, and make you thankful if you never had to go through a hellish experience like this.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: The Complete Sixth Season

Did I just bring back memories by posting that line? Good because now I can proceeed with letting you know about the new DVD release of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: The Complete Sixth Season. This final season of the TV series that skyrocketed Will Smith's celebrity status is full of cameos and surprises that are too funny to be missed. One in particular is the hilarious episode with Chris Rock playing a stand-up comedian AND his sister! For sure, seeing the image of Chris Rock all done up like a woman is enough to damage your psyche! But overall, this is one memorable season all leading up to a an emotional finale that might just bring tears to your eyes. Check it out!

VeggieTales: ‘Twas The Night Before Easter

VeggieTales, the animated specials that have theme songs that will get stuck in your head and annoy you all day have an Easter special. I appreciate the moral themes that they teach young kids, but that theme song drives me nuts! Anyway, it is almost Easter time and if you haven't watched this special, I recommend checking it out. It's got the familar cast that you've seen in all their other shows, except this one has a guest appearance by Cassie Cassava (voiced by American Idol finalist Melinda Doolittle). ‘Twas The Night Before Easter will have kids and parents laughing along as they get reminded what Easter is all about. Big Idea comes through again with some sharp animation and a valuable lesson for all to remember.

Charlton Heston Presents The Bible and King Of Kings

With Easter fast approaching, what better way to get into the holiday spirit than with two great video releases of Charlton Heston Presents The Bible and King Of Kings!

For the past 10 years, I've had the VHS collection of Charlton Heston Presents The Bible. Now, thanks to Warner Home Video, they have been released in DVD format. This is a timeless collection of Bible stories presented by The MAN, Charlron Heston. With his trademark voice, he narrates the beloved biblical stories on location in the Holy Land. The video quality is obviously much better than the VHS format, which was the only way to view it until now. It’s a fantastic set that I definitely recommend checking out.

A classic film about the life of Jesus is out on Blu-ray, and it is good! Well, when I say good, I am referring to the amazing video quality of this old film remastered in Blu-ray format. The film itself is…. interesting. I must say the acting is a bit cheesy at times, but overall a movie that everyone should see at least once. It stays pretty close to the Biblical stories and does a pretty good job seeing what Jesus life possibly was like up close. Do yourself a favor and check this one out!

RAIN MAN on Blu-Ray

This is a film that really needs no introduction. A pivotal film in the 80’s, Rain Man is both a monumental film for the decade and the careers of Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman. This is a film that never gets old, no matter how many times you watch it. Since lately we’ve been on the topic of films getting rereleased on Blu-ray, now we get to see Rain Man. Seeing it in HD quality you notice right away the improvements such as clearer picture and audio. While it’s not the best I’ve seen on Blu-ray, I think they did a good job for this 80’s classic. Definitely worth your time to watch it again, especially with the extra features like commentaries, a documentary titled “The Journey of Rain Man”, and deleted scenes.

Moonstruck on Blu-ray

“Snap out of it!”

If you’ve ever seen the movie Moonstruck then you know what that line above means. Moonstruck is the one movie where people that don’t like Cher and Nic Cage can actually enjoy. Cher has always annoyed me ever since I was a kid. Nic Cage has to be in the right role, otherwise his performance usually has me feeling awkward. Well Moonstruck is the one movie where you forget that you’re watching Nic and Cher. This classic romantic comedy is filled with great one-liners and is a smart and witty take on love. In case you haven’t heard, the film has released on Blu-ray. Considering this is from the 80’s, you can definitely see the difference in watching the Blu-ray version. Much clearer picture on the widescreen and HD audio makes it a good movie-watching experience. Of course features have been thrown in for an extra bonus. Some included are audio commentaries and a feature titled “Moonstruck: At the Heart of an Italian Family”. In short, a good title to own for any fan of the film.

BAMBI Diamond Edition

One of the all time classic coming-of-age movies has been released in all its Blu-ray glory. Bambi is one of the most beloved Disney films, and why wouldn't it be? What's not to like about the cute deer growing up and facing the joys and sorrows of life? I think that this is a timeless film that people of all ages can learn from. Now about this special Diamond Edition. This is a 2-disc combo pack, so it includes the Blu-ray and DVD version for you to enjoy. As enjoyable as the film is, I thought the special feature "The Making Of BAMBI" was very informative and entertaining. If you like seeing how films get done, then this feature is right up your alley. So if you haven't had the opportunity to catch this classic in hi-def, do yourself a favor and check it out.

He-Man & the Masters of the Universe - The Complete First Season

I thought they were done with releasing He-Man. Apparently, they're not. Mill Creek Entertainment has released the ENTIRE first season all in one collection. That's right. Rather than release different volumes of one season, they decided to pack ALL episodes from this legendary cartoon into one box set. So that means A LOT of enjoyment for all you He-Man fans.

Pros:

Great video and sound quality. Around 22 hours of MOTU fun for anyone looking to reminisce about this great cartoon. PLUS, there is a wonderful documentary on a bonus disc that includes interviews with the creators of the show. Most questions related to the creation of the show are answered in this in-depth documentary. Not to be missed.

Cons:

The packaging! Arrggh! They did a great job with the artwork on the outside cover, but once you open it you'll be surprised to see each disc not in a foldable booklet of some kind, but individual envelopes. You'd think for a collectible set like this, that they could have spent more time creating some cool packaging along with the great discs. But it seems like where they excelled in one, they lacked in the other. On the bright side, it's not like you're just going to be staring at the box! But still, it would've been nice to have some kind of collectible box to go with the discs.

Overall it's a cool set that any He-Man fan can appreciate.

Newworldson

Yes, there is hope for Christian music. If more artists with raw talent like Newworldson keep coming out, they could reshape the way "Christian music" is done. On their self titled album, these guys bring a lot of funk, heart, and soul in thir songs. The constant theme in their music is one that points back to the Creator. The style is hard to pin down, since one minute you hear a little jazz, then some straight up funk, then Stevie Wonder, etc. This is one band that streches their musical styles all over the place, and the results are songs that be sure to get your body and soul moving. Check out their album and you won't be disappointed.

Here are some of the books I’ve been fortunate to check out recently.

Fearless by Max Lucado

I really like this guy’s style. From his Punchinello children’s stories to encouraging books for adults such as this one, Max always finds a way to get the heart of the reader. In Fearless, Lucado provides a very hopeful book with timeless advice that points the reader to a God as the source of all hope, no matter what the circumstance. Hard as it may be, if followed properly, this is one book that can truly help you to become “fearless”.

Drops Like Stars by Rob Bell

This great book put out by Bell is a collection of photos, personal stories and other life illustrations that drive home the point that suffering unites us as humans. Very profound in its writing style, this book also weaves in the story of how God joins us in our sufferings, and that we’re not alone. It’s a big book (literally) too, so don’t expect to be able to put it on a bookshelf! It’s best left out on a coffee table as a decoration.

O Me of Little Faith by Jason Boyett

At first glance this book would appear to jump on the trendy “doubt” bandwagon, but this one is as honest as it gets. I found myself connecting with Boyett in his confessions in many ways, and appreciated his “confession” style of writing. Rather than drive you away from God, this is one book that deals with doubt honestly and pushes the reader to seek God further, even amidst a sea of doubts.

The Message – Large Print Hardcover

Yes, I reviewed this translation of the Bible before. But this time I checked out the large print version of the Message. Where the Remix version was one that’s great for keeping in the car or just carrying on the go, this large print version is perfect for adding to a home library. Crack it open and dig into the large print text on each page. This one is easy to read, and a great one to own for anyone eager to study more of the Bible.

The Dude Abides: The Gospel According to the Coen Brothers by Cathleen Falsani

I’m not a big fan of some books that try and pull (or put) Christianity into everything related to pop-culture. Being the movie buff I am, I appreciate those books written by people who “really get” the story, rather than try and fit a certain film into THEIR worldview. This is one of those books. This one mainly deals with films made by Hollywood legends, the Coen Brothers. Warning: This book contains many spoilers so if you haven’t seen some of the films, you may want to not read about them in this book. Falsani really did her homework when it came to these movies. After reading this, you may not watch a Coen Brothers film the same way.

Newsboys - "Christmas! A Newsboys Holiday"

Are you like me where you get the post-Christmas holiday blues after the sacred day just flies right by? Well one way of dealing with it is with some great Christmas songs! Sure the holiday's over, but who says you still can't jam to some jolly X-Mas (CHRISTmas for those who get uptight about the deal with the letter X thing) songs! One good recommendation is the "Christmas! A Newsboys Holiday" album dropped by the Newsboys! Now mind you, this is the post-Furler era Newsboys now fronted by Michael Tait. I would've loved to hear a X-Mas album with Peter as singer, but this album hits the spot as far as Chrismas jingles go. It's a short album with only 5 tracks. But put on repeat, this album can still bring holiday joy up until Valentine's Day. I enjoyed each track, but standouts for me are their cover of Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You", and "O Holy Night". But like I said, each track is full of holiday cheer, so put in on repeat and ENJOY!

THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE (Blu-Ray)

Boy turns into geek and turns into a sorcerer to win his love. Gosh I love stories like this!

The Sorcerer's Apprentice is one film I was waiting to come on video. Now that it's out, I wasn't let down. This film has got the makings of a great family adventure. Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel shine in this fantasy/adventure set in Manhattan. The Blu-Ray has got tons of extra features adding value to this set put out by Disney. Overall this is one film great for family movie night, or just to kick back and see an entertaining film!

VeggieTales: It's a Meaningful Life DVD

VeggieTales, VeggieTales....

If you have kids, or know someone who does, and have had the chance to watch any VeggieTales specials, then you know that song can get stuck in your head for days. I have shown these to my son ever since he was 4 years old. He's 11 now, and it was nice to be able to sit with him and still be able to enjoy VeggieTales when we watched the recent DVD called It's a Meaningful Life. In this show loosely based on It's A Wonderful Life, Larry the Cucumber stars as "Stewart" (get it? Jimmy Stewart?). Stewart gets a lesson in contentment after wondering "what if" his life turned out differently. Overall, this is a fun show to watch with the family. VeggieTales has always been good at delivering a moral message to kids through innovative animation. So do yourself a favor and check it out for the holidays!

Fantasia and Fantasia 2000: 2-Movie Collection Special Edition

Hello there great peoples of the world!

I count it a pleasure to mention to you about the FANTASTIC Blu-ray/DVD release of the Fantasia and Fantasia 2000: 2-Movie Collection Special Edition. Just in time for the holiday season comes this 4-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack containing both DVD and Blu-ray versions of both Fantasia and Fantasia 2000! If you thought it was an amazing experience watching these films, wait until you see them on Blu-ray. Not only does the set have both films, but it is loaded with special features galore. One standout feature out of all the others for me would have to be short film "Destino". This was a a collaberation between Walt Disney and Salvador Dali started in 1946! The film had to be get put off due to financial concerns, but was picked up again by Roy E. Disney in 2003 and eventually finished up. With a lot of sets getting pushed out in time for this season, be sure to get your hands on this set. And for your viewing pleasure, check out the following video clip!

He’s Your Dog, Charlie Brown! (DVD)

Peanuts fans can rejoice with the new release of He’s Your Dog, Charlie Brown! Warner Bros has given this one the deluxe treatment with all updated audio and video. See the famous beagle Snoopy go to puppy boot camp when the gang gets fed up with him. But loyalty and friendship get tested when Snoopy wonders how it might be with a new master. Watch to see if Chuck can bring his beloved beagle back home in this Remastered Deluxe Edition!

Smallville: The Complete Ninth Season (Blu-ray)

Another great title is out from the WHV video collection. This time it’s the complete ninth season of Smallville. I checked out the Blu-ray version and the quality on this set is superb. Although I’m not the biggest fan of the show, I do like it and am glad it’s still trucking along on TV. In this ninth season, the trouble and the drama cranks up 1000 notches with the relationship between Clark and Lois heating up. Action isn’t lacking either this season with guest appearances by DC characters such as Wonder Twins, Dr. Fate, Hawkman, and the notorious Zod! High-quality video and fast paced action make this set one of the year’s best!

Vampire Diaries: The Complete First Season - Blu-ray

Whoa! Between this show and True Blood, it's clear that vampires have taken over the TV networks. It would be too easy to brush a TV show like Vampire Diaries off as another way for someone to cash in on the sudden vampire trend. But don't jump your guns just yet. This show is definitely not a "flash in the pan". I believe it has what it takes to make it in the long run. With a very compelling storyline, mysterious characters, and great acting, Vampire Diaries is a hit that will be here for a while. The only beef I have with the show is that the teenagers are WAY too mature for their own good here. It might have been more believable if these were college kids. Instead, some of these high schoolers are involved in relationships that would be way over their heads in real life. I wouldn't want any teenagers in my family emotionally invested in relationships the way some of the kids here are.

Despite the flaws I mentioned above, I think this show is something that a lot of adults can "sink their teeth into". I've always been a sucker for a good vampire story, and this is one of the best I've seen in a while. I finally got to finish the first season on Blu-ray and honestly, I couldn't get enough. With the cliffhangers at the end of each show, I was left hungry for each episode. The quality of video on the Blu-ray colection is superb and made it much more interesting to watch. Warner Bros seems to be finishing the year off right with this addition to their home video collection.

The Middle: The Complete First Season

Family comedies have been redeemed thanks to the hit show The Middle. Watching this show is one of those that really makes you feel like part of the family. Patricia Heaton stars as Frankie Heck, frazzled mom of 3 trying to keep her head above water. Along with her husband, they try to remain sane amidst all the complications of raising a family. What makes this show work is that underneath all the wacky situations the family goes through, it is a very realisitc look at what having a family looks like. A big plus is that it doesn't rely on turning the family into "white-trash" for our enjoyment like some shows do. You actually feel for these people, especially the youngest kid known as Brick! Check out the first season on DVD and you'll see what I mean. It's a fine collection of episodes from one of TV's best comedies! And for your viewing pleasure, check out this clip:

If you're like me and have your reservations about the new direction the Newsboys are heading, then seeing them live should squash any doubts you may have. Recently they passed through NJ, and my son and I went to see them play at the Great Auditorium in historic Ocean Grove. Overall, it was an electrifying performance that had me reeling for a couple days afterwards. They played most songs from their new album along with oldies like Shine, He Reigns, and Breakfast. The audience was captivated by a phenomenal show, and I can't wait to see them pass through this area again. To give you a taste of the performance, here's a video I took of the song Miracles from that night's show. Matt Maher - Alive Again

Matt Maher’s album, ALIVE AGAIN, so aptly named, is a breath of fresh air in today’s polluted airwaves, wherein “cool tunes”, per se, rule over substance, and mere noise have replaced real music, as these misguided and image-driven artists, in blind pursuit of relevance, continue to embrace bland formulas and popularity over their God-given talents and musical integrity. This unpretentious, stripped-down music displays a genuine balance between substance and creativity, without the latter running amok for its own sake; take note of Maher’s vocal ease and Audrey Assad’s cool harmony in a couple of tracks, especially in Garden. With its lyrical and melodic strength, this album is solid and certainly deserves some serious airtime in its entirety, though my favorites are Alive Again, Sing Over Your Children, Hold Us Together, Love Comes Down, Letting Go, You Were on the Cross, Christ is Risen, and Garden. Each track eloquently delivers a message that turns your thoughts to our glorious Creator who richly blesses, even with eternal life, which many of us would rather reject, instead of actively seek or even honestly question God.

Pick up the album, if you care to nourish your spirit. The music is a gem for the jaded listener, and may very well make you feel alive again. Plainly put, it is food for the soul and the lyrics are included in the no fuss, yet artful insert.

Stellar Kart - Everything is Different Now

If frenzied pop-punk is your thing, then you’d probably dig the latest album put out by Stellar Kart.

Lately, the term “worship” has developed into a style or genre, instead of an act of reverence. So I do have my reservations when I hear an album (or anything for that matter) described as “worship”. I honestly wish that the term would be done away with. But for the time being, I’ll use it here since that’s the word used for the theme of this album.

Stellar Kart, if you haven’t already noticed from my intro, is a Christian band. As a believer myself, when I listen to the songs on this CD, I understand the connection they sing about. As for the style, I really haven’t been into the pop-punk sound since the Blink-182 days, with the exception of Relient K (which lately has evolved to a much more mature sound). However, after saying all that, I like these guys. It’s a fun album with a lot of heart behind it. I played it a few times driving home in traffic to give me that extra jolt of energy I needed. The standout track for me would have to be their cover of "Spirit In the Sky". It’s definitely unlike any other version of the song you ever heard. Overall, it’s an album that gives you the pleasure of indulging in some frenetic sounds while contemplating on life and God.

James and the Giant Peach: Special Edition

We all know that Tim Burton directed the recent Alice In Wonderland starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. Well when you watch Burton’s films long enough you start to realize he IS the Mad Hatter. His unique films draw you into another world as each one comes to life on the screen. From Ed Wood to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Burton has been consistent in delivering some memorable films with his eccentric style. One of his most beloved is James and the Giant Peach. I recently checked it out on the new Special Edition Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack. If you loved this film, then seeing it on Blu-ray will be truly enjoyable. Someone had recently said to me that stop-motion animation has become a forgotten art. Well I hope this new release will wake some people up and revive this style of animation. The Blu-ray version comes with some special features that shouldn’t be missed. There is a really funny game called Spike the Aunts where you get to “spike” the nasty evil aunts from the film with a rhino! Also, there is the Production Featurette which takes a look at how the film was made. This kind of feature is already expected on DVD/Blu-ray releases, so not much of a surprise there. However this shows how much work was put in to make this film. Man! You have to have A LOT of patience to make a stop-motion animated film. Overall, this is one release that I was very satisfied with.

ER: THE COMPLETE THIRTEENTH SEASON (DVD)

Newsboys - Born Again

When the Boys light up...

They’re back! By “they” I mean the band that still goes by the name “Newsboys”. But to me, they are a totally different act. Don’t get me wrong, I like the idea of Newsboys’ members Jeff, Duncan, and Jody joining forces with the Lenny Kravitz of Christian music: Michael Tait. Ever since the dc Talk days, Tait has proven that he is one of the premier vocalists in the industry. From dc Talk to his time with his band Tait, he has belted out some memorable tunes. But let’s face it, without Peter Furler, what we’ve known as the Newsboys is long gone. Maybe they should have changed their name to TAITboys? Well whatever you feel like calling them, their new album Born Again hits stores July 13th and I had the chance to listen to an advance copy (thanks Stacie!). To get right to the point, this is a good album. Tait’s powerhouse vocals fit the band’s sound perfectly here, especially on the more aggressive tracks (see Born Again for example). And the band sounds tight also on the slower tracks like On Your Knees. One funny thing I noticed is the track titled Miracles that kept reminding me of a certain song called Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson. I never imagined I’d be comparing the NEWSBOYS with Manson! Anyway, to sum it up, this album is not a letdown. I feel this is the band Tait was meant to sing for, especially after his previous projects didn’t fare so well. So do check it out and see what you think about these TAITboys, uhhh… I mean “Newsboys”.

Tom Jerry Deluxe Anniversary Collection DVD

It is my pleasure to present ANOTHER fine Tom and Jerry release from the WHV collection of DVD's! This time we have the Tom Jerry Deluxe Anniversary Collection on DVD. I had a lot of fun watching this set that contains 2 discs filled with 30 animated shorts. As usual with this famous cat and mouse duo, chaos ensues as they literally beat the crap out of each other. I know there are people that have a problem with this show and how violent it is. But honestly, do we really need to take this show THAT seriously? Anyway, enough ranting. Everyone has their own opinion. Getting back to the DVD, fans of the show would really dig this set. I really enjoyed it and am glad to have it as part of my collection.

The Sorceress - Michael Scott

I finally had the time to read The Sorceress, and had my fill indeed, at least for the time-being until I get my hands on the next book. As with the previous books, this third sequel in the fantastic tale, The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, is an exhilarating ride right from the start, as monsters-in-disguise chase the protagonists through St. Pancras Station to the Sorceress’ escape from Alcatraz. This edition equally brims with mounting battles, surprising turns, unforeseen alliances, and unexpected encounters, on top of endless references to legendary characters, both fictional and factual, if you can handle a bit of information overload. The Saracen Knight, Shakespeare, and Gilgamesh all turn up this time amidst an onslaught of some of the most grotesque creatures to ever emerge in any mythical realm—sea-creatures, flesh-eaters, vampire breeds, the Horned God, wolf-men, and other beasts, dog-like, bear-like, goat-like, and definitely unlike we’ve ever seen before. Even the fabled Virginia Dare and Billy the Kid make their devious appearance alongside the enemies, as well as "normal-looking humans which are "the most frightening of all" for Josh Newman. I’m very curious about how this incredible epic will be translated onto the big screen. I’m hoping that the filmmakers come close enough to Scott’s literary creation and not lose the story in its immensity, which seems common to big productions getting too caught up in their hullabaloos.
As the race to save or destroy mankind heats up, the Flamels still haven’t recovered the book of Abraham the Mage from their adversary, the English Magician, and so continue to age significantly and weaken. Meanwhile, their time to protect the human race runs grim as the summer solstice, Litha, draws near. On that day, the twins’ auras will have reached their full strength as the barriers to the Shadowrealms weaken, thus enabling the Dark Elders to unleash inconceivable horrors to wipe out humanity and reclaim the world. I have a strange fascination with Christian music. There are times when I cringe from what I hear, and there are times where I see artists with tremendous talent living out their faith. My favorite out of all the Christian artists would have to be the boys from down under, known as the Newsboys. I guess I should say that they STARTED OUT as a band from Australia. Now, after band members coming and going, they have only one true Aussie left (Duncan Phillips). Lead singer Peter Furler, who for me epitomizes everything good about this band, left the band to be replayed by Michael Tait. I still can’t fully express how I feel about this since I always thought Peter WAS the Newsboys. Honestly I think they should have just changed their name. Time will tell how this all pans out in the next few years, especially with their new album being released in July. Anyway I thought I’d bring up three Newsboys albums released before Furler’s “retirement”.

Newsboys Live: Houston We Are Go

After the Newsboys' experiment into the “Worship” territory, they released the album Go. This album returned back to what the Newsboys built a reputation on: lively, bouncy tracks that get stuck in your head for days. Newsboys Live: Houston We Are Go is the CD/DVD version of their tour that supported this album. Let’s face it, I can’t imagine getting let down from a Newsboys show, so this release is obviously is good. However, after seeing their Newsboys - Shine: The Hits Live DVD from 2001, I don’t think another release can top that one. That one set the standard as far as the quality of a Newsboys show. And while Houston We Are Go isn’t a letdown, it doesn’t hold up to Shine. However, if you want to see a more recent concert with all of the Newsboys excitement, then check out Houston We Are Go.

Newsboys: The Ultimate Collection

Want to get a full dosage of Newsboys fun? Then check out the ULTIMATE COLLECTION. This 2-disc set contains most of their best tracks over the years. Of course with each album there are pros and cons. Pros for this would have to be it has most of their well known tracks. Anyone not familiar with the band would do well by listening to this to get a good feel for their sound. Cons would be that it doesn’t contain enough of songs from their old days. I’m talking about when guys were rockin’ mullets and playing songs heavily influenced by the 80’s. Other than that this album is one to have for any fan of the ‘boys.

In The Hands Of God

This album is significant in that it’s the last album released with Peter Furler as lead singer. Reviews for this one were somewhat negative from critics, but forget what they say. At first I wasn’t blown away, but it really grew on me after a few listens. I still keep it on rotation in my playlist. This album is a little more rock than previous Newsboys albums, and the lyrics contain the usual quirky lines that you’ve come to expect from them. Standout tracks for me are The Way We Roll, No Grave, This Is Your Life, The Upside, Dance, and RSL 1984. Honestly, I am sad at the fact that Furler isn’t performing with them anymore, as this is one of the few bands that kept Christian music from heading to the graveyard. I will miss the days of seeing the bald headed Aussie leading the band in their energetic shows. Hopefully, like many other artists that “retire” (Jay-Z, etc) Peter will come back… SOON!

VALENTINE’S DAY - Blu-ray

Hey everybody, it’s VALENTINE’S DAY!

Actually, it’s not.

But it can be when you watch the romantic comedy on Blu-ray!
With an all-star cast leading the way, this film can either improve or ruin your date night. This film by veteran filmmaker Garry Marshall takes a look at love and how it intertwines in the lives of the different characters. It’s not the best Garry Marshall film, but it’s got some pretty funny moments and is a decent comedy. I checked out the Blu-ray and along with the film there are some cool extra features. There’s 14 Deleted Scenes with intros from Garry Marshall, Gag Reel, and a music video for Jewel’s “Stay Here Forever” to name a few.

Invictus - Blu-ray

A powerful movie with some great acting.

I've been bored lately with a lot of movies. To see Invictus was a breath of fresh air. As you may know, it’s out now on Blu-ray, and if you haven’t watched it yet, I highly recommend you check it out. Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon pull off some really great acting, and much kudos goes to Clint Eastwood for his directing skills. This powerful film tells the story of how President Mandela tries to unite his country through rugby! If you have been jaded with movies, then give this one a shot.

Angel Time

What's up with the fascination with angels lately?

Beloved writer Anne Rice surprised everyone when she made the announcement that she'll be writing for the Lord from now on. Known as an atheist for most of her writing career, this news was a shocker. Now, after her releasing some books on Jesus, she has presented a gift to us in the form of a metaphysical thriller. Angel Time is the book, and it is one that takes a little time to get used to. Some parts are a little slow, but necessary in the bigger picture. Overall, it's a good read. Anne Rice still hasn't lost her touch when it comes to writing. It's just that now her faith seeps into every story. And that is fine with me. We need more writers like Anne that can mix faith and art in a very real way.

Legion - DVD

If humanity were about to get “smited”, and our only hope was in the Archangel Michael, would you feel good if he appeared as Paul Bettany? That’s what happens in the end-of-the-world action flick Legion. I have to admit this movie was “OK”. Not phenomenal, but “OK”. There are some pretty cool action sequences that balance out some of the lame acting. Mr. Bethany did a decent job of playing Michael. The whole concept of the film is badass, with the fighting angels and whatnot. Overall, it’s an enjoyable action film that hopefully will open the door for more warring angel films.

The Bible!

The Bible is a book that stirs up different feelings for different people. Some people loathe it; some hold it in the highest regard. Some think that its fiction and some find it to be a series of texts that are literal documents to support their faith. As a believer, the Bible is a comforting book, yet it’s confusing at the same time. I’ve wrestled with a lot of the stories I’ve read. Some have made me laugh, some have strengthened my faith, and some have made me doubt. But overall, I am fascinated by it. After saying all this here are some versions of the Bible that I’ve found to be helpful.

The Jesus Storybook Bible
Every Story Whispers His Name

Now this isn’t a real “Bible”. But as a father raising a son, I think this is an amazing book to share with a kid who is learning about faith. It is pretty straight-forward and really has some cool illustration by a guy named “Jago”. The writer of the stories in here is Sally Lloyd-Jones, and she brings a fresh perspective to these Biblical stories. I definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a book to share with their kids. I even admit that some of the stories have given me a new way of looking at the biblical texts!

The Message//REMIX 2.0

This is a funny version to read, yet I love it. It doesn’t change any of the meanings in the Bible (although some critics will tell you otherwise). It’s just translated into everyday modern language. It always gives you something to ponder, and really makes reading the Bible fun without “watering it down”. It does take some getting used to, especially if you’re used to the “Thee’s” and “Thou’s”. But overall, it’s a version that has changed the way I read the Bible in a good way.

AVATAR - DVD

Man, I can't believe how fast this movie came on DVD. So let's get down to business! Avatar (the highest-grossing film of all time) can now be viewed at home thanks to Fox Home Entertainment. Now I had the chance to check it out on DVD, and while it's great to view the film in my living room, I was expecting more. To put it bluntly I was expecting some extra features. I mean anything would have been fine. But sadly, there were none. There were no interviews, alternate endings, commentaries, etc. That's my main beef with the DVD. So on one hand, having the film at home is great. On the other, if you're expecting any extra features, don't look here. So if you're just looking to check out the film and nothing else, then the DVD will do just fine.

HAMLET - DVD and Blu-ray

A contemporary look at Shakespeare's HAMLET comes to DVD and Blu-ray. Starring David Tennant as and Patrick Stewart, this is a fresh take of Shakespeare's famous play. What’s great about this version is that rather than being filmed at the theater, this was filmed on location. All fans of Shakespeare can appreciate this contemporary version of the play. Overall, it’s a well acted and very well produced version of HAMLET.

IRON MAN and X-MEN!

What perfect timing to release the complete 1994 animated series of Iron Man on DVD. With Iron Man 2 in theaters, it's a great time to revisit this great animated show! This 3-disc collector's set contains all the episodes from this series. Here we get to see Iron Man do battle along with Nick Fury, War Machine, Scarlet Witch, Spider Woman and Hawkeye. Overall, it's a cool set to own for any fan of all things Iron Man!

Next on DVD is X-MEN: Volume 5. This set is a 2-disc collection of Episodes 63 to 76 from the animated series. Being that this is the final installment in the series, it's a must see for any X-Men fan. Some things in store on this set include the X-Men seeking help from Magneto, and the final episode “Graduation Day"! Don't miss out on this final volume in the X-Men collection.

THE OFFICIAL INAUGURAL CELEBRATION DVD

Obama was put in office in 2009, so I'm not sure why only now a DVD of his inauguration was released. Is it to distract us from the mess that's going on in this country? Who knows? Well whatever side of the political fence you're on, Barack Obama's presidency is one that we'll have a hard time forgetting. Out now on DVD is a collection of the Obama Inauguration festivities. All of the performances from artists like Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Jon Bon Jovi, Sheryl Crow, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, U2, and Usher are here in this 2-disc collector’s set. Also included on this set is the Neighborhood Ball that has the President’s and First Lady’s first dance. Oh, and along with the entertainment of course we get to see Obama's swearing-in and inaugural address. Overall, this is a set that captured the best moments of this historical inauguration.

FFH - Wide Open Spaces

The name "FFH" may not mean anything to you, unless you are familiar with this veteran CCM band. Whether you're a fan or not, I think this is one of the most surprising albums I heard recently. In a nutshell, these songs were born out of pain. After the band went on a hiatus, singer Jeromy Deibler was diagnosed with MS. I'll spare the details here since you can look up other interviews online that cover his story. This album is worth checking out, especially to hear some very honest songwriting that doesn't hide the pain that comes in life. And yet, the album still leaves room for hope. I honestly didn't expect to be writing about a FFH album, but this one was a nice surprise.

Armageddon - Blu-Ray

Remember when Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck saved the world back in 1998. Well now you get to see ARMAGEDDON all over again on Blu-Ray. This is one movie that is way over the top, but in a good way. I’m not sure why they decided to re-release it now, but this movie does benefit from the Blu-Ray treatment. This is one of those films you pop on to kill a few hours and get a few laughs and thrills along the way. With end-of-the-world movies becoming so trendy now, I got reminded that this came out before all the hype. If you enjoyed this film, it’s worth checking out on Blu-ray. However, I wish they would have added more bonus features on the disc.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (DVD)

Alvin, Simon and Theodore are back. If you didn’t get enough of them the first time around, then you’ll be happy to see they’re joined by the Chipettes. However, Dave (played by Jason Lee) is missing from most of the film. To provide comedic support in his place this time is Dave’s cousin (played by Chuck’s Zachary Levi). There’s not much depth in a film like this. This is strictly family entertainment, with a little bit of publicity thrown in for certain singers (Hi Beyonce!). But overall, it is an enjoyable film that kids and adults can enjoy together. It’s got some pretty funny scenes, and some really cheesy ones. But hey, we’re talking about the Chipmunks here! So for a family comedy, this one is a hit.

Night Court: The Complete Third Season (DVD)

The Night Court theme song will never get old...

Another trip down 80’s memory lane comes this time courtesy of Warner Home Video with their release of Night Court: The Complete Third Season on DVD. I enjoyed this set a lot as it brought back so many memories of my youth. As I popped in the first of this three disc set into my DVD player, that familiar theme song rang through my head, reminding me of the fun times I had watching this show. Judge Harry and gang are all here in 22 hilarious episodes packed into this collectible set. Overall, this is one set that doesn’t let down and reminded me of one of TV’s great sitcoms from the 80’s.

Tom and Jerry's Greatest Chases, Volume 4

I can never get tired of seeing the cartoons of my youth get released on DVD. Speaking of that, Tom and Jerry's Greatest Chases, Vol. 4 is out on DVD. This DVD contains 14 classic cartoons from the craziest cat/mouse duo. Seeing these two go at it is absolutely hilarious, and this set is a lot of fun to watch. The running time is over an hour, but I would have liked to see it hit closer to the two hour mark. However, this set is still a great one to check out for all the hilarious insanity that’s included.

FLASHFORWARD: Part 1, Season 1

FANTASTIC!

That would have to be the one word I'd use to describe the hit show Flashforward. This conspiracy/thriller centers on a global event when every human blacked out for two minutes and seventeen seconds and gets to see a glimpse of their life in the near future. Exactly WHAT caused it and WHO is behind this catastrophe is the fuel that keeps the show running. From the story to the acting to the shocking scenes that unfold, this show is pretty mind-blowing. I got the chance to see the first 10 episodes on the show’s recent DVD release. This 2-disc set is an absolute gem with the 10 episodes and extra bonus features. Features such as a teaser to an upcoming episode, and a behind the scenes look at the pilot. From the moment I popped in the first DVD, I was hooked. Now after seeing this set, I am stoked to see what lies ahead for this series!

Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra-Doo (DVD)

There’s nothing like a little Scooby-Doo to brighten up your day. For all you fans of the Mystery Inc. gang, they’re back again in Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra-Doo. This brand new DVD from WHV follows the gang as they visit Daphne’s sister Madelyn at the Whirlen Merlin Magic Academy. As expected, they discover there are some strange happenings going on. In particular, people have reported sightings of a giant Gryphon. Leave it to Scoob and the gang to uncover what’s really going on. If you are looking for a video to give you some good laughs, Abracadabra-Doo should do the trick.

Former SNL funnyman Joy Mohr is back with a hit sitcom, and this time he’s Gary Unmarried. Out now on DVD from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is the entire first season of this hit show. This quirky show takes a look at life after divorce for the main star Gary. Trying to help raise 2 kids after a divorce has got to be tough. But imagine finding out your ex-wife is engaged to your marriage counselor! That’s part of the crazy world that Gary finds himself in. On this DVD set are 20 episodes on three discs, along with some extra special features. Features like Season One bloopers, a tour of Gary Unmarried by the cast and crew, and much more. Overall, it’s another great TV series released on DVD by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.

Bruce Willis hasn’t lost his touch. The action movie superstar has aged, but he still knows how to carry a film. In Surrogates, he stars as FBI agent Tom Greer in this film that was based on the famous graphic novel. In a world where people live their lives through human-like machines, things are not as they seem. This almost perfect world where crime is almost nonexistent flips upside down when a college student dies. Agent Greer suddenly gets drawn into something much bigger as the world is threatened. Surrogates is a film that is great for any sci-fi fan. It’s got a compelling story and the special effects are pretty impressive. The Blu-ray disc makes the film much more enjoyable to watch with crystal clear picture and some really good extra features. One feature in particular shows how the film was brought to life from the graphic novel. So if you’re in the mood for a great sci-fi flick, check out this one.

Edge of Darkness - DVD

With the new Mel Gibson movie coming out, it’s good to see the original series that inspired the film. The original BBC series Edge of Darkness has been released on DVD, courtesy of Warner Home Video. While the video quality is not the best, the acting and story behind this series has all the goods that make a great thriller. Any fan of BBC productions would appreciate this collectible set. It’s great for people like me who never got to see the original to watch before seeing the new film. And for anyone that’s already watched the series, it’s a good time to revisit this classic.

ER: The Complete Twelfth Season (DVD)

More drama in everyone’s favorite ER. In real life, the last place you want to be is in the ER. But on TV, it’s hard to keep your eyes off this gripping series. Already over the 12 season mark, this show has stood the test of time. And on the DVD set for the twelfth season, there’s so much drama inside and outside the hospital. This six-disc set has all the episodes that over 10 million viewers tuned into every week during this season. Impressive! To give you a glimpse, there’s a mother looking for a runaway son, a doctor with a questionable past, a doctor returns from Iraq, and one heads to Darfur. This set is out now courtesy of Warner Home Video and I definitely recommend checking it out.

MAKE IT OR BREAK IT: Volume 1 and 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU: Volume 1

With so many good TV shows on these days, it is pretty hard to narrow down the ones that are worth watching. Surprisingly, ABC Family is one network that has a great selection of shows to check out. Two of these, which just recently got released on DVD for the first time, are Make It Or Break It and 10 Things I Hate About You.

Make It Or Break It is about four teenage girls on their way to the Olympics. In this gymnastic drama, there is a lot of rivalry as you see just how far they will go for their dreams. It shows the highs and lows that come with extreme competition among teens, especially girls. The Volume One DVD set gives you a chance to revisit the show again with over 400 minutes of running time. Features on the DVD include a behind the scenes look at the show, extended episode, deleted scenes, and a lot more to keep fans of the show busy for quite a while.

Next is the series 10 Things I Hate About You, which is based on (you got it!) the hit movie starring Heath Ledger. While the show has some significant differences from the film, as a show it is one of ABC Family’s best. It’s witty, funny, and the cast holds up the show really well. This Volume One DVD set is definitely worth checking out if you want to see teenage comedy done right. Along with the episodes, the set contains lots of additional features such as audio commentaries, bloopers, and much more. Even if it didn’t have all the extra features, I still would recommend it for all the laughs and clever stories in each episode. Check it out!

Wow, I can't believe it's been TEN years since 10 Things I Hate About You came out. Not only was this Heath Ledger's American screen debut, but it is one of the BEST teen comedies ever made. Witty dialogue, a solid cast, and one of the funniest paranoid dads you'll ever see make this one a hit. I forgot how good this film was, until I recently checked it out on the Blu-ray version. On this 10th Anniversary Edition of the film, the film gets an updated look on Blu-ray AND you get to see some great never-before-seen footage on the special features. The feature 10 Things I Love About 10 Things I Hate About You 10 Years Later takes a trip down memory lane with an inside look at the screen tests done for the talented cast of this film. With a running a little over an hour, this feature also includes lots of one-on-one interviews with the cast and crew. So if you enjoyed this film as much as I did, do yourself a favor and check it out.

I don't remember watching this show in my younger years, but after checking out Ruby-Spears Superman on DVD, I am now a fan. I'm glad WHV decided to release this on DVD, because it really is a great animated series. The colors are nice and bright, and on the 2-disc DVD set there are 13 very entertaining episodes to really enjoy. The dialogue is a little cheesy at times, but overall the show is enjoyable. I definitely recommend checking it out.

Leave it up to Mike Judge to poke fun at the typical American workplace...

What happens when you take director Mike Judge and throw in Jason Bateman, Kristin Wiig, Ben Affleck, Mila Kunis, and Gene Simmons from KISS? You get EXTRACT, the latest comedy from Judge out now on DVD and Blu-ray. Followers of Mike Judge will remember him mostly for his cult classic Office Space. It’s been a while since he put out something like that. Now, we finally get to see EXTRACT. While this film is no Office Space, it does have all the elements of a great Mike Judge comedy. The stereotypical characters in the workplace are dead on, as anyone who has been a part of drama in the office can relate to the shenanigans that go on here. Jason Bateman does a great job playing the owner of a flavor extract factory and having to deal with all the strange daily happenings within his company. Not only that, but he has some sexual frustrations with his wife, played by Kristin Wiig. Surprisingly, Ben Affleck pulls off a memorable role as the annoying “friend” to Bateman’s character, who causes more trouble than you can think of. I checked out the Blu-ray and if you are looking to see this film, definitely get the Blu-ray version. Not only is the video quality 10 times better, but you also get some extended scenes AND an exclusive deleted scene not shown in the theaters. Overall, I recommend this movie because of its ability to highlight the eccentricity of life in a typical American company.

End of the Year DVD list

I've been compiling an end-of-the-year DVD list for releases that came out in 2009. And without further ado, here they are:

John Lennon & The Plastic Ono Band Live In Toronto '69
This DVD contains the only performance caught on film by the above named band. John and Yoko sharing the stage together is quite a site to see. If you are a fan of John Lennon, I highly recommend you check it out. Yoko is real annoying here, but John does his magic on stage which turned out to be one great performance.

The Middleman: The Complete Series
Defending the Earth against against “exotic problems” is a tough job. But it never looked funnier than it does in The Middleman. This set released by Shout! Factory contains the entire series in a collectible 4-disc set. For fans of the bizarre and anything related to graphic novels, definitely give this one a try.

Parker Lewis Can't Lose: Season One
Finally! One of TV’s best series to come out in the past 20 years gets released on DVD. Parker Lewis was the hit series on FOX that was around in the early 90’s. Parker, you may remember, was the Ferris Bueller-ish character that made this series memorable. Witty, funny, and wildly entertaining, this DVD set of the first season is not to be missed.

BROTHERS & SISTERS: THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON
This kind of show is usually not my cup of tea. However, if you are into family dramas, then this set may be right up your alley. A six-disc set of this ABC show starring Sally Field and Calista Flockhart, BROTHERS & SISTERS: THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON contains all the episodes along with cast interviews and deleted scenes to keep you entertained. Like I said, it’s not my type of show, but if you are, then you’d dig this set.

Transformers: Season Two, Vol. 1 25th Anniversary Edition
Shout! Factory continues to please fans again with the release of Transformers: Season Two, Vol. 1 25th Anniversary Edition. Optimus and company are back this time in a 4-disc set with the first 28 episodes from the show’s second season. Old and new fans alike will enjoy this collectible set that reminds us just how damn good this series was.

G.I. Joe A Real American Hero: Season 1.2
Yo Joe! I haven't seen the movie yet, but from what I hear it can't hold up to the original animated series. Speaking of which, the second part of the first season put out by Shout! Factory contains 22 episodes with all the explosive action that made this show such a hit. Great for adults and kids alike, this makes a great addition to any fan's collection.

Mr. Belvedere: Season Three
You didn’t think he was gone for good, did you? Everyone’s favorite snarky housekeeper is back in the DVD set of the third season. This set keeps the laughter coming with episode after episode of the 80’s hit show Mr. Belvedere. If you like you’re housekeepers overly-sarcastic, then don’t miss this one.

thirtysomething: the complete first season
I was too young to get into this show when it was out, but with the release of the first season on DVD, I can now see why it was a hit. This show taps into the lives and struggles of a group of “thirtysomethings” and is just as relevant now as it was then. On the DVD set you’ll find 21 episodes, a behind the scenes look at the show, and commentaries with the cast and crew. Check it out.

Mister Ed: Season One
Wilburrrr...
I remember seeing this as a kid on Nick At Nite. The infamous talking horse and his owner Wilbur provide tons of laughter in this DVD set of the entire first season. Released by Shout! Factory (surprised?), this set shows that this talking horse can never be outdated, and is still able to keep viewers laughing after all these years.

THE BIG BANG THEORY: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON
Who knew physicists could be so funny? This second season DVD set of the hit series THE BIG BANG THEORY proves that they can. With 23 episodes packed into this one set, let Leonard, Sheldon and friends show you just how funny they can be. Highly enjoyable, this set is one that is perfect for any fan of this hit series.

CASTLE: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON
This one hit me by surprise. A bestselling novelist hooking up with a New York City detective to solve some serious crimes is just the right series to please any fan of crime mysteries. This three disc set contains lots of suspense and some extra features such as bloopers and extended scenes to make it a very entertaining collection to own.

LIFE ON MARS: THE COMPLETE SERIES
One of the best series I watched on DVD this year, LIFE ON MARS: THE COMPLETE SERIES is one that I’ll be checking out again down the road. When a NYC police detective gets mysteriously transported from 2008 back to 1973, things get pretty strange. This set contains all the episodes of this intriguing and suspenseful series and is one of this year’s best releases.

Saint Nicholas: A Story of Joyful Giving (DVD)

I'm a sucker for Christmas specials. That's one thing that hasn't left me since I was a kid. I'm more biased towards the traditional ones (i.e. Rudolph, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, etc) since that's what I grew up watching. Recently I just checked out the latest from the VeggieTales catalog titled Saint Nicholas: A Story of Joyful Giving. With the trademark quirky humor that comes with most Big Idea productions, this holiday special tells the story of Saint Nicholas, the world’s greatest giver. It is a fun look at the origins of St. Nick, and one that is worth watching during the holidays. Although the music annoyed me at times, overall it is an entertaining show to watch with the family.

With Christmas fast approaching, a lot of us can probably use some good music to chill out to. Something to warm and comfort your soul. I would like to recommend two albums that I believe are destined to be classics. These are Salvation Is Created and ‘Come O Spirit!’ Anthology of Hymns, and Spiritual Songs Volume 1. Under the new Great Comfort Records, who’s founder is Lenny Smith (yep, Danielson’s dad) these two albums have some of the most creative spiritual tunes that you’ll get a chance to hear. If you’ve ever longed for the day when you’d hear some real creative songs rich with spiritual themes, then look no further than these albums.

Relient K - Forget And Not Slow Down

Like wine, Relient K's music gets better with age...

I love it when I'm caught by surprise. After hearing "Five Score", I was convinced that Relient K isn't a band that's destined to be a forgotten act. In fact, with each new release, they get better and better. This time, they put out what may be their best yet: Forget And Not Slow Down. What has been a rough past year or so in singer Matt Thiessen’s love life (apparently he had a bad breakup) has turned into a rebirth in creative freedom for his music. The jist of this album can be found in the album’s title “Forget And Not Slow Down”. Basically the theme is to forget about the negative things that weigh us down and move forward with life. The album is laced with honest lyrics about going through those rough times in life. You could say it’s therapeutic. Ironically there is a track titled “Therapy” to support this idea. Overall, this album contains the trademark catchy hooks that Relient K has become famous for and some thought provoking lyrics making it one of the year’s best releases.

Lily Allen - It's Not Me, It's You

Lily Allen has graduated from mere flippancy in her sophomoric first album to a classier, more composed cheek with such melodic ease and lyrical wit in conveying her insights in It’s Not Me, It’s You. This time, she confronts societal norms, conformity, youth, relationships, and self-absorption of all sorts—in short, life—and calls for an openness that’s evocative of the late George Carlin, unapologetic, but that’s altogether chic, sassy, and melodious. With its delightfully varied sound that’s intermittently indie, jazzy, retro, as well as country, this album is a complete fare that’s entirely seasoned with sophisticated sarcasm for those finer, contemplative moments.

With the opening track’s, “Everyone’s At It”, sobering message about drug prevalence which infect all of society, “from grown politicians to adolescents”, and that could only be solved by admission, the song is in sheer contrast to its breezy melody, easy synth, and subtle beats,

Likewise, “The Fear” has a contradictory upbeat sound for such grave lyrics describing a human frailty caused by worldliness:

“I want to be rich and I want lots of money
I don’t care about clever…about funny
I want loads of clothes…diamonds
…people die while trying to find them
…take my clothes off…
…that’s how you get famous…
I don’t know what’s right or real anymore
…how I’m meant to feel anymore
...cause I’m being taken over by the fear
Life’s about film stars and less about mothers
…all about fast cars and cussing each other
But it doesn’t matter ‘cause I’m packing plastic
…makes my life so f**king fantastic
And I am a weapon of massive consumption
…how I’m programmed to function
I’ll look at the Sun and I’ll look in the mirror…
…I’m not a saint but I’m not a sinner
…everything’s cool…I’m getting thinner
…I’m being taken over by fear”

“Not Fair” is a galloping western bop that’s in sardonic contrast to what’s being sung, which is the utter dilemma of being in a relationship fraught with mounting discontent over the kind of sexual intimacy one is engaged in.

“22” is an 80’s jingle reminiscent of Belinda Carlisle’s “Circle in the Sand” or Madonna’s “Cherish”, but where they cooed about a seeming frivolity, Allen coolly croons about the difficult feat of confronting societal standards which declares that the only thing left for a 30 year old lady to do is to wait for the “man of her dreams”.

“I Could Say” is a song of liberation from that certain “chip” on the shoulder, wherein Allen cheekily chirps, “Since you’ve gone, I’ve lost that chip on my shoulder… I’ve gotten older…the whole wide world is my stage… …I’ve been let out of my cage”.

“Back to the Start” has perhaps the fastest danceable rhythm, as in the 80’s new wave with a subtle chime-like synth, that conversely plays a message of apology for one’s past jealousies and an appeal to start over.

“F**k You” sweetly expresses defiance against intolerance, with a kick in the air, joined arms a la the Rockettes, repeated chanting of “F***k you very very much”, and sticking both tongue and lollipop in the cheek, while jumping to the tune’s pulsing beats.

The following tracks have similarly breezy melodies, but with slightly slower tempos:
While “Never Gonna Happen” relates an unsteady relationship, “Who’d Have Known” examines a growing affection. And “Chinese” is quite the song, as well as the food, to have around when thinking about cuddling in front of the TV with a dear one. And whereas Allen blithely questions god in “Him” with unquestionable cynicism, she airily hoots about a father’s neglect and desertion with unmistakable sarcasm in “He Wasn’t There”.

Have this album for easy, thoughtful listening with a bit of shake. It’s especially soothing for those inspired moments when you’re itching to break out the paint, write, or simply be creative in other ways.

KOBE DOIN' WORK (DVD)

I THOUGHT SPIKE LEE WAS A KNICKS' FAN???

Mr. Spike “Do The Right Thing” Lee is known for many things. Film director and die-hard Knicks fan are two that come to mind. That’s why I was surprised when I heard he made a film about Lakers’ all-star Kobe Bryant. Well whatever his motivation, Spike made a fine film following Kobe on court during a very pivotal game in the 2007-08 season. Kobe Doin' Work is an in-depth look at one of the NBA’s best players during a game between the Lakers and Spurs. With Kobe as the narrator and footage from the game filmed using 30 cameras, you literally feel like you are on the court yourself. For any serious basketball fan, this is as close as you can get to feel like you are a player yourself. The camera work in this film is incredible, and I was very impressed with this film that’s definitely not the standard “Spike Lee Joint”. Overall, Kobe Doin' Work is a very entertaining look at a tremendously talented player.

Have you heard their ting? That you haven’t heard their tunes is very unlikely since their debut album was released sometime last summer, topping the U.K. chart and sending the tireless Madonna to rest then. Here are my two cents on yet another grand act to emerge from Big Ben’s soil: upbeat and offbeat. Fresh is hard to come by these days even in a highly advanced society, and the irony is we’ve been there, done that, seen and heard it all, and recycled, revised, and repackaged so heavily as we’ve figured out the formulas, that there seems to be very little left to be discovered as original, especially in music. Hence, it’s always refreshing to see those who manage to reinvent and rise above the crowd every now and then, regardless of how long they stay up. And when one creates a distinct sound, it’s got a certain ring, or ting, that will cause you to listen again and again. And this dynamic duo’s certainly got it. They most certainly have that “ting” factor. The funky fusion of Jules De Martino’s dominant drumbeats and Katie White’s sometimes brazen, sometimes fragile, and frequently distressed or defiant vocals merged with their various other musical elements and influences, one of which echoes a pared-down, 80’s new-wave among others, power the invisible machine behind their playful sound. Their music is a little fresher and groovier than most of its contemporaries that currently saturate our airwaves. Even as the duo chant “We Started Nothing” incessantly in their finale, the 8-tract album can serve as an instant tonic to get you started in those days needing a bit of jolt, with Great DJ, That’s Not My Name, Fruit Machine, Shut Up…, Keep Your Head, We Walk, Impacilla Carpisung, along with the title tract, or just keep you coolly on your feet, with the Traffic Light and Be The One, even if only for a little more than half an hour, unless you have it on repeat.

One of NJ’s finest!

Being that I’m from NJ, I take pride when I see Jersey boys make it big. I remember seeing a little known film called Clerks back in the 90’s. It blew me away. The dialogue and comedy was perfection. When I found out the filmmaker was from NJ, it was one of those “A-ha” moments. Suddenly I saw the film in a different light. I saw characters in the film that reminded me of people that I grew up with. It was then that I became somewhat of a Clerks fanatic. Ok, enough rambling for now. Let’s get down to business: THE KEVIN SMITH COLLECTION on Blu-ray. If you love K-Smith’s films as much as I do, then you will NOT be let down with this set. On here are new Blu-ray Editions of Clerks and Chasing Amy, along with Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. I remember the days of renting these on VHS, so to see these remastered versions was truly an awesome experience. The video quality never looked better. Each individual disc contains HOURS of entertainment with the film and all the bonus features. These aren’t really the kind of movies you need to watch on Blu-ray to really get the film. It’s the witty dialogue and trademark humor that does the trick all by itself. But what makes this set really stand out is the BONUS FEATURES. I am not kidding when I say that I spent hours glued to the TV with these extra features. The Clerks disc has a really long feature showing you how Clerks eventually became the cult classic that it is today. You get to see pieces of Kevin Smith’s life growing up, interviews with friends and family and much more. The Chasing Amy disc has some really great Q&A with the cast, giving you further insight into Kevin’s neurotic relationship issues that inspired this great film! Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (their “selling out” film”) has commentary with Kevin Smith, Scott Mosier and Jason Mewes, Deleted Scenes, a gag reel, and lots more.

I guess I’m biased because of the fact that I consider myself a K-Smith movie buff. But seriously, this set is one of the best that I’ve come across. Overall, I consider this one a big hit.

I swear, Pixar's films get better with each new release.

One thing that’s been consistent with Pixar’s films is how much they amaze me each time I watch. Although, I was a little let down by Bolt. However, Up restored my faith in Pixar’s ability to create a technologically advanced and profound film. The animation and story for Up is one of Pixar’s best to date. With the DVD finally out, us viewers finally get a chance to bring it home. As always, Disney puts out a high quality set with the 4-disc Blu-ray & DVD Combo Pack. With crystal clear video and amazing sound quality, this is a must have set. Packed with extra features galore including commentaries, an original short film about my new favorite movie dog named Dug, and alternate endings that the filmakers thought of using to get rid of the enemy known as Muntz! Seriously, I can’t tell you how entertaining this set really is without seeing it for yourself. Overall, Up is one of the most adventurous animated films in recent years that has a subtle way of reminding you to not let life pass you by. I highly recommend checking it out.

Skillet - Awake

Veteran hard rockers known as Skillet are out with a new album called Awake. Notice I used the word “veteran”, because well, they’ve been around the Christian rock scene for some time. However, recently they started getting more recognition in the music industry. I remember seeing them featured not too long ago for Awake in a Best Buy circular under the hot new acts section. It’s funny though because Skillet isn’t really a new act. Like I said, they’ve been around for some time. Well, I guess they’re new if you’re not too familiar with Christian rock. Anyway, if you never heard them, Awake is a great album to start with. I’d say if there’s an album that will thrust them into the limelight, this will be the one. Skillet is one of those bands who’s at their best when their rocking hard AND playing sweet ballads. It’s hard to pull off songs on both extremes like that, but Skillet does it quite well here. For example, one of the album’s harder tracks called Monster is trademark Skillet. It’s an aggressive song that deals the internal struggles that most of us can relate to. On the other hand there is the slower song Don't Wake Me, which is the perfect example of how they can pull off a nice ballad. Overall, this is an album worth checking out whether you’re a long time fan, or just finding out about Skillet.

SUPERMAN/BATMAN: PUBLIC ENEMIES (DVD)

Get ready for an awesome film experience with the latest animated DC Universe Animated Original Movie: Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. This is one tense film. With a Kryptonite asteroid on its way to hit Earth and Lex Luthor as the nation’s President, things don’t look too bright. Add in the fact that Luthor puts out a $1 billion bounty on the heads of Superman and Batman and declaring them enemies, things look pretty bleak. But leave it to the Man of Steele and the Dark Knight to rise up against some insurmountable odds. This film (out now on DVD) takes a unique look at what it would be like to see an enemy become a President, and our heroes become outlaws. Like every other DC Universe Animated Original Movie, this one is rated PG-13 and it appeals to grown-ups hungry for a good action film, as much as younger viewers. The animation, story and action scenes are very impressive in this film. Overall, it’s hard to pick my favorite out of these DC Original movies that WHV keeps putting out. But I would have to say that this one is definitely in the top 3. Overall, it’s a film I definitely recommend to anyone looking for a good superhero film.

MUTEMATH - LIVE AT NOKIA THEATER NYC

I saw MUTEMATH in concert this weekend. This marks the 4th time that I’ve seen them in NYC, and so far I’ve never been disappointed. The last 3 venues I saw them play were B.B. Kings, Gramercy Theater, and Irving Plaza. This time was different as they played right in the heart of Times Square at the Nokia Theater. I was reminded how far this quartet from New Orleans has made it when on my way to find parking, I saw their video for Typical played on the big screen outside the theater. This show was part of their “Armistice Fall Tour”, so I already expected to not hear the soaring intro that they’ve always done to start off their shows before exploding into Typical. This time, the band wasted no time when they took the stage as the floor started rumbling to the thunderous track The Nerve. With the crowd singing “Set it on fire!” along with Paul Meany, it was a great way to bring in their new material in a live setting. I admit when I first heard the Armistice album, I wasn’t as impressed as I thought I would be. However, it grew on me after time and I enjoyed it each time I played it. Hearing them played live was a different experience. If you thought hearing songs like Backfire, Clipping, and Armistice were great, wait until you hear them in concert! The execution of each track was flawless, giving me a new appreciation for their latest album. Of course, it wouldn’t be a real MuteMath show without hearing songs like Control, Chaos, Typical, and Break The Same (which they all played). However one of the best surprises of the night came when they played a song that only the most loyal MuteMath fans would recognize: Peculiar People! I was real happy to see them play that song, as it is the second song I heard from them back in 2005, after hearing Control. Overall, MuteMath put on a hell of a performance, giving these Tri-State fans exactly what they came to see: a loud, energetic, and unforgettable performance. If you never saw this band live, I highly recommend doing so the next time they come around.

ZORRO THE COMPLETE FIRST AND SECOND SEASON (DVD)

No, we’re not talking about Antonio Banderas version. I’m talking about the ORIGINAL, black and white Disney series that’s been re-released on an awesome DVD collection. Seasons 1 and 2 have been brought to DVD and they come in a special tin collector’s case and contain each episode in some really clear audio and video quality. These sets are definitely a must have for any fan. As always expected from Disney, they provide this time some really high quality sets for Seasons 1 and 2. I enjoyed watching these very much. To be able to relive this classic show and see it in all its DVD glory was a lot of fun. To give you an idea of what’s on these sets, check this out:

David Dark - The Sacredness of Questioning Everything

David Dark is a pretty smart guy. He’s the kind of guy that uses big words that will have you grabbing your dictionary to understand. His writing is thought-provoking and engaging. With all of that said, he’s got a new book out. This one is called The Sacredness of Questioning Everything, and it will really stretch your mind. As you can tell from the title, this book encourages “questioning”. Questioning what, you may ask? Question our pre-conceived notions about God, philosophy, politics, you name it. In fact, he says true questioning is actually healthy. Using lots of pop-culture references, personal stories, and his unique perspective on things, this book is definitely an eye-opener. It may shake some people out of their comfort zone, but it is definitely a valuable piece of literature.

David Crowder Band - Church Music

There’s much more to David Crowder than the beard.

David Crowder Band is one of the most creative bands you’d hear these days. The thing is, they make music for the church (Christian). So chances are if you’re not a Christian, you probably haven’t had the chance to hear this great band. There’s been this ongoing debate about what defines “Christian” music, and whether or not it simply all sucks. There is the “Christian version of a mainstream act”, which usually equates to a lack of creativity from an artist where they see their music strictly to share their faith. While I can see where they are coming from, the quality of the music is usually low. Now here’s the kicker with David Crowder Band. They are definitely “Christian” as far as the messages in their songs. That part is clear so you know where they stand with that. But the quality of their sound is definitely original and I would even say better than some mainstream acts. The thought just popped in my head if there’ll be a day when we’ll see a mainstream version of a Christian band. One thing is sure, if that day ever comes, David Crowder Band would be the band that people copy from. Take their latest album Church Music for example. If I had to choose one word to describe it, I would say EPIC. From start to finish this is a well produced, hypnotic album that takes you away with each track. With this band, you never know what to expect with their wide range of influences. Here, they incorporate everything from rock to electronica to create probably their best album to date. Another nice surprise is the guest appearances by the band Eisley and Lacey from Flyleaf on various tracks. So if you’re already a fan of the DCB, then you’ll see they upped their standard a bit more on this release. And I must say, even if you’re not a believer, give this album a try. You’ll be in for a surprise. Trust me.

Ice Age: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs (DVD)

The gang is back from Ice Age, and this time they meet some more prehistoric friends. As if the Ice Age films weren’t good enough, adding dinosaurs to the cast makes it a whole lot better! Ice Age: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs finds Manny as a proud new dad, and Sid thinking he is one. When Sid finds some abandoned eggs, he takes them as his own, not realizing they’re dino-eggs! That sets off a chain of events that put the gang against some Jurassic giants! This film was lots of fun to watch. Just like the others, everything from the animation and comedy is in top form. The DVD is out now and it contains lots of fun extra features such as two special Scrat shorts, deleted scenes, director’s commentary, and an Ice Age digital story book maker. Make sure you don’t miss out on this one!

Two and a Half Men: The Complete Sixth Season (DVD)

I don’t have the time to keep up with regular TV. That’s why I’m thankful for TV sets on DVD. Two and a Half Men is one of those shows that I would watch religiously, if I had the time. Since I don’t, I’m glad to be able to catch it on DVD. The latest season to be released on DVD is season six. This four-disc set contains all 24 crazy episodes of this hilarious show. Yeah, sometimes it’s over-the- top, but that’s what makes it great. Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer work great together as the comedic duo of the show. One of the highlights of this sixth season is seeing Charlie’s character begin to take some responsibly when he thinks he’s the father of one of his ex-girlfriend's kids (the joke's on him)! Overall, this is a great DVD set that provides hours of laughter.

Smallville: The Complete Eighth Season (DVD)

The eighth season of the longest running “Superman” TV series is out in a fantastic DVD set. Otherwise known as Smallville (you heard of it right?), this show proves that it’s among TV’s best as it has made it this far. In this eighth season, two characters draw closer to their destiny: Clark as Superman, and Davis Bloome as Doomsday! The season is filled with so many thrills and new characters that it leaves no room for it to be lacking in entertainment value. On this DVD set, all 22 episodes are here along with tons of extra features, including a special one called “Smallville’s Doomsday: The Making of a Monster.” This set is extremely entertaining from start to finish and I highly recommend it.

17 Again (DVD)

I wish Matthew Perry would start getting more roles. He’s probably my favorite actor out of the Friends cast and I was happy to see him star in 17 Again. Yeah I know Zac Efron is really the main star here, but Perry had an important role too playing the elder Mike O'Donnell. I didn’t expect much going into this film, other than a slapstick comedy. But it was the universal theme of a guy that’s unhappy with his life and at risk of losing his family that got me. I really liked the humor in this film and think this is the one to break Zac Efron out of High School Musical limbo. Expect to see more of him in the near future. Overall, this was an enjoyable film that a lot of people facing a family crisis can relate to, and laugh along the way.

Donald Miller - A Million Miles in a Thousand Years

Donald Miller is back with a new book titled A Million Miles in a Thousand Years. For those of you familiar with Don, you’ll probably remember a little known book called Blue Like Jazz. This book is what thrusted Don into national spotlight as a bestselling author. Don’s unique writing style is one that brings the reader into the story rather than just being a spectator from the outside. His transparency makes you feel like you’ve known him personally for a while. In A Million Miles, his style hasn’t changed much, except for the fact that he seems a little more mature and wiser. You won’t find any stories about confessional booths on college campuses or penguin sex, but you will get inspired to really LIVE life to the fullest. To sum it up, Don takes the opportunity to edit his life just like a character in a movie. And he invites us to do the same. It’s hard to come away from a book like this and not see life differently. Having said that, I recommend this book to anyone who’s stuck in a rut. Scratch that. I recommend this book to everyone.

CRASH: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON (DVD)

What’s not to like about a show that has Dennis Hopper ranting and raving like a madman?

Based on the hit film, Crash is a Starz TV series that tackles the issue of race relations in Los Angeles. The show hits on a real touchy subject and doesn’t back down from displaying the real ugly side of the characters’ lives. Family tensions, corrupt cops, sex, drugs and drama galore are shown here in this hard hitting show. Watching the hell that some of the characters go through is enough to show you how not to live. And I must say, the acting is very convincing, especially Dennis Hopper’s crazy old-man record producer character. Anchor Bay Entertainment has put out the complete first season on DVD and I was satisfied checking out the set. The quality of the transfer from TV onto DVD is impressive and it includes all episodes from this show’s first season. However, I’m curious to see how far they can take this show when there’s so much competition on the other cable networks. Time will tell.

Elvis Costello - Secret, Profane & Sugarcane

I am NOT a fan of country music. But when I hear that music legend Elvis Costello made a country album, it's enough to make me tune in. You may be saying, "Elvis Costello playing country??? Who's next? David Bowie?" Yep, I was just as baffled myself. But playing Costello's album Secret, Profane & Sugarcane has at least allowed me to see country in a whole new light. I'm still not a big fan, but I can appreciate the style just a little more. Elvis really went all out in creating an album that is way outside his usual genre. The end result is an album that is pleasing to hear, even for someone like myself who NEVER enjoyed country.

LEGEND OF THE SEEKER: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON (DVD)

There’s nothing like watching a solid epic story transformed on TV. Speaking of epic stories, Legend of the Seeker is a fantastic series that joins the ranks of some of TV’s best shows. Executive produced by Sam Raimi, Legend is based on the best-selling “Sword of Truth” novels and it is loaded with mesmerizing effects and some great acting. It’s a show that I hope will stay on for a while. With the release of the entire First Season on DVD, fans won’t be disappointed with this amazing set. With top-notch audio and video quality, this 5 disc set contains all 22 episodes for viewers to enjoy. Everything from the packaging down to the features on the discs is impressive. Speaking of the features, there are plenty to enjoy on here from behind the scenes interviews to audio commentaries. Overall, it’s one set that doesn’t let down. And to give you a little glimpse, here are some clips to check out.

Nick Swardson: Seriously, Who Farted? (DVD)

This should get an award for one of the best DVD titles of the year.

Nick Swardson is not the type of comedian that makes you think about deep issues (i.e. George Carlin). But even though you won’t find anything much to ponder on, the guy is one funny bastard. Yeah, his material is juvenile and you eventually get tired of hearing how wasted he gets. But the guy can make you laugh. For example, take his DVD special titled Nick Swardson: Seriously, Who Farted? I watched it recently and amidst all his stories on getting piss drunk and his adventures as a single guy, I found myself laughing hard. One skit in particular about why he can’t wait to be old had me cracking up. For a standup comedian, Nick is one talented dude. And on this DVD, he puts that talent to use. However, I’m curious to see if he adds more thought-provoking material as he gets older.

The Proposal (DVD)

With romantic comedies, I’ve gotten to the point where I can predict what will happen at the end. It’s not some psychic power I have. It’s just that the movies are so predictable. That doesn’t mean that they aren’t enjoyable though. Take The Proposal for example. From the first time I saw the previews I already knew what to expect. But as predictable as it is, it is an entertaining film. Out on DVD, The Proposal stars Sandra Bullock as a bitchy boss in a book publishing company and Ryan Reynolds as her dutiful assistant. When she gets threatened with deportation because of an issue with immigration (she’s Canadian), she quickly thinks up a scheme by stating that she’s engaged to Reynolds. For the rest of the film they need to pretend they’re engaged, even going as far as visiting Reynolds’ family in Alaska! That’s when the film has its funniest moments. There are some pretty funny skits in The Proposal as well as some heartwarming moments, but it’s not unlike anything that’s been done before. However, this is a great “date film” to watch or if you’re in the mood for some quick laughs. Overall, it’s not the most original film, but it’s one that is sure to entertain.

Ugly Betty: The Complete Third Season (DVD)

Is there anything more to be said about Ugly Betty that hasn’t already been? This highly addictive show is no doubt one of TV’s best. All you Betty lovers out there, the DVD set for the Third Season is an awesome collection to own. This season is filled with lots of fun and surprises including guest appearances by Bernadette Peters, Ralph Macchio, and Lindsey Lohan. We also get to see lots of changes in Betty’s life as she moves to a Manhattan apartment, earns a slot at YETI (Young Editors Training Institute), and gets involved in some hilarious situations involving her wacky coworkers at Mode. The DVD set runs at about 946 Minutes and features lots of extras such as deleted scenes, bloopers, commentaries, and much more to enjoy. Overall, this set is a big hit.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: THE COMPLETE FIFTH SEASON (DVD)

I never thought I'd enjoy watching Desperate Housewives, but I must confess that after seeing what goes on at Wisteria Lane in the DVD set of Season 5, I can see why this show is a hit. This set is filled with lots of juicy secrets, drama, and some hilarious scenarios that the cast gets involved in. Friendships and relationships are tested as the heat is turned up in this season. With a running time of over 1000 minutes, this DVD set contains every episode of this hit show. Along with the episodes are some bonus features (listed below) that add to the value of this set. Fans definitely will not get let down with this impressive DVD collection of Season 5.

I had more appreciation for Relient K's music after seeing them live at the RevGen festival in NJ last month. Fans got their money's worth as the band put on a superb show, playing tracks from their first album up until now. After hearing how well they played live, I got interested in digging into some of their latest albums. The two that I wound up checking out were Five Score and Seven Years Ago and The Bird and the Bee Sides.

Starting with Five Score and Seven Years Ago, I must say this album is one that shows a much more mature band compared to their days of chanting "Sadie Hawkins". They still have their "tongue-in-cheek" style, but overall this album definitely shows their progression as a band to be taken seriously. From beginning to end, it's an album that you can play on repeat and be totally satisfied. The ending song Deathbed is an epic track that will bring you to tears, if you pay close attention. That was the song they finished their set with at RevGen and it was a very moving experience.

Next is The Bird and the Bee Sides. Released in 2008, this album is packed with all kinds of goodies for fans to indulge in. The band stretched their style a bit more here as there are songs containing country and ska influences. It's probably more enjoyable to listen to if you've followed the band for a while, especially since there are some rare tracks on here. Overall it’s an album that shows Relient K isn't destined to be a washed-up pop-punk band. These guys actually got skills!
