Q-Tip - The Renaissance

Q-Tip, the veteran hip-hop emcee who is best known for his work in A Tribe Called Quest shows that he’s not dead yet. You can’t deny that hip-hop is drastically changing. Some say for the better, others for the worst. The ones who are sick of the current state of hip-hop claim it’s become too commercial and has lost its soul. Leave it to Q-Tip to come in and try to set things in order. With his work in Tribe, he established himself as one of the best rappers to pick up a mic. Now in 2009, he releases The Renaissance. I always respected Q-Tip’s style and how he stayed true to himself through the years. After getting a heavy dose of artists like Lil Wayne and Kanye the past few years, The Renaissance was a breath of fresh air. Nothing against the artists mentioned above, it’s just that I will always be biased towards the artists I grew up listening to. The Renaissance is a collection of finely tuned songs in which Q-Tip lyrically runs laps around your mind with his trademark flow. If you’re looking to hear new material from Tribe, you won’t find it here. But what you will find is an album that takes it back to the basics with some raw creativity.
