THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (DVD)

"I am fearful when I see people substituting fear for reason."

That wise quote is from the film The Day the Earth Stood Still. This classic science-fiction movie was released on DVD this month, just in time for the new version starring Keanu Reeves. After watching it, I must say the original is just as relevant today as it must have been in the 1950's. Doomsday seems to be approaching as a mysterious alien and his robot come to Earth with a friendly reminder that if people don’t learn to get along, then the Earth is toast. Highlighting the fact that we humans are so good at fucking things up, this alien gives us a stern warning to clean up our act, or else. The Day the Earth Stood Still is a thought provoking movie that has a lot to say about war, politics and human relationships. For a movie from the 50’s, I thought the story was ahead of its time. I haven’t had the chance to see the new version yet, but I think it’s a good idea to watch this one first. This DVD contains the classic film and an exclusive first look at the new version. And with all the special features included, it would make a great addition to any sci-fi lover’s collection. Be sure to check it out...
