One Missed Call (DVD)

One Missed Call
Own it on DVD (4/22/2008)

Pray that you don't get a phone call. In One Missed Call, if you get a weird message on your phone dated in the near future, you're actually hearing yourself die. One Missed Call is a remake of the Japanese horror film Chakushin ari. Japanese horror usually has an advantage over American horror because they rely more on psychological terror instead of blood and guts. And that plays a big role in this film. I can't compare this version to the original, since I never saw the Japanese one. My reaction after seeing One Missed Call on DVD is that it was a well done horror film with some really disturbing images. Like other J-Horror films like The Ring and The Grudge, kids play a role in this. Remember how some of the creepiest scenes in horror films involve kids (The Shining)? Well they continue that tradition here with another kid who is frightening as hell. Along with the kid factor, you have all these images with some really disturbing looking masks (see the DVD cover) that appear to people after they receive their voicemail. To figure out why people keep dying after getting these phone calls, Jack Andrews (Ed Burns) and student Beth Raymond (Shannyn Sossamon) do some investigative work. It's personal to both of them because Jack's sister and Beth's friends have died after receiving phone calls. But just as they are getting close to finding an answer, Beth gets the dreaded call on her cell. Suddenly, they must find an answer because Beth's apparent death is approaching quickly. This leads up to a chilling ending that finds the two main characters confronting the evil that's responsible for the killings. Who will live and who will die? The answer lies at the end of this frightening film.
