Igor (DVD)

"I'd rather be a good nobody than an evil somebody."

That's the one quote that stuck in my head the most from watching Igor. This film about an “Igor” who dreams about becoming an evil scientist is out now on DVD. In this movie, “Igors” are nothing more than slaves that work for the evil scientists in the land called Malaria. What separates the main character (John Cusack) from all the other Igors like him is that he refuses to spend the rest of his life in the dark. This Igor has dreams about becoming a great evil scientist. And when his master is not around, he works to create his own inventions. One day he actually succeeds in creating a live creature who he calls “Eva”. Everything seems ok about her except that she's kind hearted. And in the land of Malaria, kindness is not a virtue. Being evil however, is a great quality. So when Igor sees this “flaw” in Eva, he tries to get her to become what he made her to be. But through a series of events, Eva does actually live up to her potential. However, Igor and the others in Malaria quickly see the consequences turn catastrophic. Now it’s up to Igor to stop Eva from destroying everything and get her back to her good nature. Of course, that’s not the only theme in the film. You can find other themes in here such as working hard to achieve your dreams, no matter what your status in life is. But the one that came through clear was the power of free choice in life. We all have an "evil bone" in us. But as Igor points out to Eva, we have a CHOICE on whether or not to act out on it. I really enjoyed watching this movie, especially the dark sense of humor and all the quirky characters (Igor’s companions called Scamper and Brian are a riot). If you enjoy an animated comedy a little bit on the dark side, Igor is just the movie.
